Her Story: Tall and dark, she exudes an air of prosperity, refinement, and grace. Yet, beneath the surface of opulence, her soul is burdened with the weight of loss, sorrow and regret. Gilded in the trappings of success, she is a vision of both grandeur and melancholy.

Your Story: "Gilded" mirrors the collective emotions that often come with mourning a past life left behind. The darker, more intense colours in this piece represent the bittersweet essence of high ambitions and the sacrifices we have to make in order to achieve them. Sometimes, it can be a little lonely at the top, and we long for the comfort of the simple life we left behind. This evocative art piece is a reflection of the challenges faced in the pursuit of greatness, making it a poignant addition to any home or office art collection.

My Story: When I photographed Ava (my model), I knew I wanted to create pieces in this art collection that touched on sadness and nostalgia—because as we know, life isn’t always sunshine and roses. Continuing with my accidental theme of beauty, feathers, and nature, I painted a big black feathery gown, inspired by the 2010 ballet movie Black Swan. Growing up, I was taught to colour within the lines but I've fallen in love with the fluidity and transparency of loose watercolour techniques and the freedom to stray beyond the boundaries was quite exciting. 

The red poppies symbolise loss, perhaps something forbidden and also remembrance. While most of the piece is done in watercolour and pencil, I embellished her with gold leaf, using both thick and delicate patterns. My goal was to draw the viewer’s eyes downward, mirroring the direction of her beautiful, yet sad and forlorn face.
